What I do

Greek to English literary translation.

Σε συναντάω στη γλώσσα σου, σε συστήνω στη δική μου.

"She’s with her handmaids now. Wrapped in an expensive coat with fur cuffs and collar, legs with slim ankles tucked into patent-leather moccasins qui feraient la rage. Her hands are thin, aristocratic, ungloved. Her hair guided into place, elegance portrayed. Distrait, she raises her right hand. She, too, will take part in the calling of the cab..."

Maria Tsatsou

"WITH EACH FLICKER OF A CANDLE, THE SAINT IN THE ICON ACROSS FROM ME SEEMED TO COME ALIVE. SHAKING, HE TRIED TO TEAR FREE FROM THE WOOD AND TOUCH THE EARTH, DESCENDING TO THE GROUND IN FRONT OF HIM WITH WIDE RED ROBES, ENHALOED HEAD AND EYES GAZING OUT FROM A PALE, DISPASSIONATE FACE..."

Georgios Viziynos

"A TEENAGER NOW, HE SAW HIS GRANDMOTHER GETTING OLDER TOO, AND HE WATCHED HER FALL INTO FORGETTING, INTO OBLIVION. HE SIMPLY COULDN’T TAKE IT— HE WANTED HIS GRANDMOTHER BACK! HE WANTED YIAYIA THE WAY SHE’D BEEN, THE WAY HE’D ALWAYS KNOWN HER!"

About Me

Απ' τους πολλούς με δυο πατρίδες. Μεγάλωσα Αμερική, νοστάλγησα Ελλάδα.

I learned most of my Greek later in life, and it felt like undusting a part of me that had been tucked away for years.  It’s this process of discovery that inspires my translations; I try to translate people, not just words.

Recent Work

My most recent large-scale project was the translation of Niko Christou’s book Το Κούρεμα into English.  It was a pleasure to work with Niko and to bring his story to a wider readership.

"Literary translation is not considered an easy assignment. However, Michael embraced the project from the very first second, not only providing consistent and creative work through time but in the meantime he was available to explain or clarify any doubts of mine, discussing any possible solution on obstacles. Great positive attitude and professionalism that makes you enjoy the whole process of whatever you might be creating."
